FareShare Southern Central

Where is your next meal coming from? Struggling to answer this question is a stark reality for millions in the UK living in poverty. With food prices rising at over the twice the rate of income of the poorest and with one in six parents on low incomes skipping meals to feed their children, food poverty is a reality for many.

FareShare’s approach is simple by working with the food and drink industry we rescue food which has been deemed as waste. Food waste is an inevitable part of the 21st century life even though food companies run efficient operations, factors such as consumer demand for 100% availability, human error, a change in the weather even a television cookery programme can change what we demand. All of this creates waste.

We can’t eradicate waste but FareShare works to reduce waste by making sure edible food is diverted to people in need. Every kind of food is rescued including larder staples, fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. Our flexibility along with our reputation for high standards in protecting brands and meeting food industry standards means we have the support of retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Marks and Spencer and Asda.

FareShare is unlike a traditional food bank as we give surplus food to community groups and charities. Most of the produce is fresh and this is made into meals and is given to beneficiaries who can enjoy a hot meal. The food helps to engage the beneficiaries with the charity. On average each project can save an incredible £13,000 a year on their food spend, funds which can be diverted to additional support services helping to address the wider causes of why they are struggling to feed themselves.
